Consonants 44
All 44 Thai consonants in dictionary order, each with its traditional acrophonic name — ก is ko kai, "ko as in chicken".
Vowels 32
Thai vowels are written around the consonant: before it, after it, above it or below it. The dash in -ะ shows where the consonant goes.
Tone marks 5
Thai has five tones. These marks, combined with the consonant class and vowel length, decide which tone a syllable takes.

How many letters are in the Thai alphabet?
Thai has 44 consonants and 32 vowel forms, plus 5 tone marks — 81 characters in total. Two consonants, ฃ (kho khuat) and ฅ (kho khon), are obsolete and no longer used in modern writing, so in practice you read 42 consonants.
Is Thai written left to right?
Yes. Thai is written left to right with no spaces between words — spaces mark the end of a sentence or clause instead. Vowels, however, can sit before, after, above or below the consonant they belong to.
How long does it take to learn the Thai alphabet?
Most learners recognise all the consonants in two to four weeks at ten to fifteen minutes a day. Writing them from memory takes a little longer, which is why every character here comes with animated stroke order you can trace.
Do I need to learn tones as well?
Yes — Thai is a tonal language with five tones, and the tone of a syllable comes from the consonant class, the vowel length and the tone mark together. Start with the characters, then work through the tone marks.
